A disposable absorbent article having a front region, a back region, and a central region disposed between the front region and the back region, the disposable absorbent article further comprising: a topsheet; a backsheet; an absorbent core disposed between the topsheet and the backsheet; a first side edge and an opposing second side edge; a first side flap and an opposing second side flap, each of the first and second side flaps forming at least a portion of the wearer-facing surface, each of the first and second side flaps comprising a first layer and a second layer, the first layer comprising a first layer proximal edge and the second layer comprising a second layer proximal edge; wherein the second layer of the first side flap forms a portion of the first side edge and the second layer of the second side flap forms a portion of the second side edge; wherein the first layer and the second layer enclose at least one elastic strand; wherein the first layer proximal edge of the first side flap is disposed laterally inward from the first side edge of the absorbent article and is attached to the backsheet, wherein second layer proximal edge of the first side flap is attached to the first layer of the first side flap and is attached to the backsheet, and wherein the second layer proximal edge is disposed laterally outboard from the first layer proximal edge; and wherein the first layer proximal edge of the second side flap is disposed laterally inward from the second side edge of the absorbent article and is attached to the backsheet, and wherein the second layer proximal edge of the second flap is attached to the first layer of the second side flap and is attached to the backsheet, and wherein the second layer proximal edge is disposed laterally outboard from the first layer proximal edge.
